NEW PAINTING: “Exchange With the Onion Witch” 18x24 Oil on Panel 2025
“Summoner and Scribe” Series 6 of 9
“Summoner and Scribe” tells the story of Benjerman Mortimer, a melancholy young lad who gives up on his dream of being an author of children’s tragedies to take a good-paying but unsatisfying job as a scribe for a Master Occultist…who specializes in the summoning of demons.
Also, in the story, there is a subtle romantic flirtation between Erie Oldfather and Anya the Onion Witch. I feel they have a lot in common: they are both practitioners of the magickal arts, they each own a monochromatic wardrobe, and they are both evil.
Benj desperately wants to quit his new job, but he is in too deep. In this painting, we see Master Occultist Erie Oldfather selling Benj’s most recently penned grimoire to Anya the Onion Witch and her associates: Matilda, the tortured ghost of a childhood friend, and the cannibal, Bloodmouth Scarman.
I am not going to lie, I really enjoyed painting the cannibal Bloodmouth Scarman…and the onions were weirdly satisfying too.
Here is the original sketch from my sketchbook, as you can see, I moved the cat to make him more prominent. So sketchy.
As of this writing, I have three more paintings to finish in this series, and they are currently all drawn out on the panels and ready to go. (Spoiler: the 8th piece in this series is quite large, which is exciting). I love writing these silly stories and spending a few months really involved with these characters, while escaping into this fantasy world. Thanks for coming by!
