The visitor calling himself Chaz Throckmorton had been causing all kinds of problems for the people of Crow, but it wasn’t until Marigold Badger followed the creature out into night that she finally realized how dire the situation had become.
The self-proclaimed genius and billionaire was feeding on her fellow townsfolk.
Through some dark alchemical process, Chaz Throckmorton—by way of his weirdly distracting machine—was converting raw human attention into life force or power. The future human was feeding on fascination blood, Marigold thought! How fascinating!
ARTIST NOTES: This is definitely one of my stranger paintings. Once again, I love juxtaposing high technology with these old-timey pioneer people. This is the fourth painting that I have painted for this series and I still have five to go. At this point I have the entire series mapped out and I am pretty excited to paint the others too.
I am sure it is obvious, but “The Mystifier” series is an exploration into our current relationship with technology, and the unsettling way that technology companies seek to dominate our attention and intentionally design addictive products. Although no real conclusions or solutions are reached, it is my personal hope that I can have some fun and make some cool-looking paintings while grapping with this idea—which frankly causes me a bit of anxiety, haha.
Though the alchemy of painting I strive to take a distressing situation and use it to inspire this series of positive, mysterious, and humorous paintings.
