“Draconian Rite of Aging” 16x20 Oil on Panel 2026
On the anniversary of his two-hundred and forty-seventh hatching-day, Repgore Fanglock was caught off guard--ambushed by his allies. He was then gifted a beautiful new war axe and a frosted meat cake made from the corpses his slain enemies. What followed was an uncommon but sweet moment of happiness.
This is the piece I painted for Arch Enemy Arts 14th Anniversary Group Show opening April 3rd 2026.
PAINTING NOTES: My initial drawing was of a reptilian sitting alone with cake, perhaps filled with self-pity and loneliness. People—myself included—can get weird on their birthdays, and I wanted to show this in the painting. I asked my wife about what she thought of the sketch and she suggested that I toss in a few more characters. I did just that, but in doing so I decided to just keep the one chair at the table, and having the other two characters standing—no, looming—over the birthday boy was awkward. And I liked that.
...I especially enjoyed painting the little lizard in the party hat.
