**NOTE: Starting in late 2019, I made the leap to self-representation. I no longer show with galleries and sell my work 100% online, here on my website. I had a lot of great experiences working with galleries, and I learned a lot too, but this decision has just made more sense for my career and the direction in which I would like to take my art.

Bio

Mark Rogers is a self-taught artist from Portland, Oregon. Stylistically his work has been described as a mash-up of folk art, medieval painting, and fairy tale illustration. Obsessed with fantasy, and tales of the supernatural, Rogers creates narrative-driven paintings populated by fictional characters that inhabit his spooky and sometimes humorous oil paintings. His work has been shown in exhibitions across the United States and has been sold worldwide. He lives and works in an old Victorian house in Fort Wayne, Indiana with his girlfriend and fellow painter-in-crime, Erica Peebus.

WELCOME TO THE SOUTHWESTERN BELLOWS

The Southwestern Bellows is the magical land that lives in my imagination, and the land where all of my paintings and drawings take place. At first glance, one might think that my paintings have an 1800s Western boho vibe, and they would be half right, but at its core, “The Southwestern Bellows” is a fantasy world with magic, monsters, adventure, tragedy, royalty, and…...nightmare-harvesting aliens that worship cactuses and eat gold. I have a pretty clear picture of this place in my mind, but every time I make up a new story for a painting, or a series of paintings, I learn a little more about this place, and the sense of discovery powers my drive to continue returning to this world.

The Southwestern Bellow is a breakaway human civilization started on another terraformed world by the Zeta Reticulan Grays. In the 1850’s human pioneers and other people from planet Earth were brought to this new planet to repopulate its lands. The purpose of this off-world colony remains a mystery, but local scholars, paranormal investigators, and warlocks believe that the Southwestern Bellows was created as part of an experiment by the Zeta Reticulans…an experiment that involves dreaming and nightmares.

I love reading fantasy novels, and typically, the traditional fantasy world is set in a land similar to Medieval Europe with magical elements inspired by folklore. The Southwestern Bellows is similar but set in a place like Early America with magical elements inspired by UFOlogy, cryptozoology, the occult, and the paranormal, which I feel is the modern folklore of our time.

It’s like this: traditional fantasy = knights and elves. The Southwestern Bellows = pioneers and aliens that eat gold and collect both decorative cactuses and human nightmares.

Welcome and enjoy your stay!

 FAQ’s

How do I buy a painting?

When a painting becomes available, I list it as a product in my website store at the very top and let people know about the new painting through my newsletter and through social media. Buying a painting is just like buying any product online. They are shipped UPS and insured for the value of the piece.

Do you have any originals available?

If there are no originals available in my store at the moment, then I am sold out. They sell kind of quickly--which is lucky for me because this is my only job. That being said, I usually have a new piece available every 3 weeks or so.

Are you open to commissions?

Sorry, I am not open to commission projects. I wish I had the time

How much do you charge for album cover art?

Unfortunately, I am not licensing artwork, minting NFT’s or open to commissions, but that could change one day.

Were you ever abducted by aliens?

Not that I know of… I have been obsessed with the unexplainable and paranormal for as long as I can remember and this heavily influences my art. I am totally fascinated by not just aliens, but all cryptids, ghosts, magick, and psychic phenomena.  I do take a bit from modern UFOlogy, but for the most part, my work is all fantasy fiction.

Have you seen an alien?

No, but I did see a UFO once in 2009 in Springfield, Oregon. It was eggs-shaped, about the size of a car, and glowing with weird orange energy. It was totally silent and soared at about 30 mph just above the roofs of the neighborhood homes until it disappeared behind the trees. It was exciting but oddly anticlimactic.

Have you ever done San Pedro, Ayahuasca, LSD, DMT, shrooms, etc….?

I ate mushrooms a few times in 1999 and really didn’t enjoy myself. I remember my friend turning into a werewolf, which was mega-unchill. Psychedelics really aren’t for me. These days I am happily sober. I don’t drink or do drugs….. anymore.

It seems like there is some sort of story going on with your work… Are you writing a book? Are all of these paintings somehow connected? What the hell is going on?

It does seem like I am going in this direction. Yes, all of my pieces are narrative-based, and they all take place in a fantasy Western-themed world, which I call, The Southwestern Bellows. I love stories, and I am an avid reader of fantasy fiction so this also greatly influences my work. Lately, I have been working on a series. Each series is based on a short story that I have loosely written in my sketchbooks and is primarily told through my Instagram posts. It does feel like I am creating a true picture book though, so this might have to happen one day!

Can I tell you about a crazy paranormal experience that I once had?

Yes, please do! I love stories!
