It was during the time of the Linterget Troll Festival when the mysterious pyramidal object that would be later known as “The Mystifier” arrived in the town of Crow in the land of the Southwestern Bellows. For the first few hours, the object projected weird imagery, completely mystifying the town's residents. Then at midnight when the folk were in a mentally weakened state, a hatch in the object opened and a man stepped out. He introduced himself as Chaz Throckmorton and said he needed their attention.

The object that would be later called the Mystifier descended from the clouds and landed in the town of Crow during the time of the Linterget Troll Festival. The strange machine possessed the ability to change its size and color, and to some degree its shape, although it seemed to favor a pyramidal form.
Through some unknown magicks it projected an unending array of vivid holographic imagery--literally mystifying and entrancing the town’s residents for hours on end. It showed dancers, musicians and magicians, cats, bats, lewd nudes, men fighting, kids crying, cute things, gross things, pickles, toes, and unknown lands… but more often than not, it showed people talking. Talking directly to the people of Crow as if they were experts or friends. And the person they saw the most was maybe not a person at all, but something else. It called itself Chaz Throckmorton and claimed to be a “Future Human”. He said that the pyramidal object was his, that long ago his company had built it, and bragged that he was exceedingly rich, immortal, and a genius.
What he failed to mention and what the citizens of Crow would later find out, was that Chaz Throckmorton was an attention-vampire.
BEHIND THE VEIL:
In the preliminary drawing, I had the Mystifier projecting an array of various faces and things related to the tarot suits...but that didn’t quite fit. I knew that the Mystifier projected all kinds of imagery, but I had the hardest time deciding. At one point it projected an owl with a candle over its head, to represent knowledge, but that didn’t quite work either. Eventually I landed on the future human, Chaz Throckmorton, who will be appearing more later in the series.
I love a good juxtaposition, in this case: oldtimey people placed next to a space vampire.

The Northern Forest in the land of the Southwestern Bellows is well known to be a nexus of mysterious occurrences and unexplained phenomena, for within these woods dwell hidden folk, unkindly magickal spirits, and even Gods. Rudolph Darkwood, born on the very edge of this forest, which was his namesake, was a lepidopterist (a person who studies and collects moths and butterflies). Rudolph loved these winged insects and was hunting for unusual specimens when, like so many others before him, he became lost. Rudolph was fond of singing, so for hours he sang to both maintain his mood and in hopes that someone might find him. But it wasn’t long before he felt the forest’s “otherness” closing in--before he felt as if he was being stalked.

On Midsomer’s day, Master Gardner, Pinkney Dill, discovered the strangest cactus growing in his garden. Where had it come from? The strange cactus stood twenty tall and resembled a handsome many-armed saguaro, except there was clearly something large and gross wriggling inside. Pinkney grimaced and shook his head. The saguaro’s flowers gave off a vaguely metallic stink, and it had an odd vertical seam down the middle. The oddest thing about the towering writhing saurago was that it had not been there the day before. It must have sprouted up overnight.

When the “grimore” was read aloud in a cemetery during a magickal operation, all of those in attendance were driven to tears by Benj’s woebegone tale--a tale about a heart surgeon for broken hearts. Here we see the occultist releasing the young scribe to pursue a career in creative writing.
