“Summoner’s Departure” 18x24 Oil on Panel 2025
Painting 9 of 9 “Summoner and Scribe” Series
“Summoner and Scribe” tells the tale of Benjamin Mortimer, a melancholy young lad who gives up on his dream of being an author of children’s tragedies to take a good-paying but unsatisfying job as a scribe for a Master Occultist…who specializes in the summoning of demons.
Benj, an aspiring author, and his wife Dovie.
Benj had been commissioned to compose a grimoire of darkest necromancy, but instead, he decided to write a sad story. When the “grimoire” was read aloud in a cemetery during a magickal operation, all of those in attendance were driven to tears by Benj’s woebegone tale--a tale about a heart surgeon for broken hearts. Here we see the occultist releasing the young scribe to pursue a career in creative writing.
The Occultist Erie Oldfather and his demonic feline familiar, Kitcan. In his youth Erie had been a concertina player, but when he played poorly for his old master—magus Palor Mournshade, he was punished by having his hands turned into claws. In a fit of anger, Erie strangled his former master and claimed the Occultist mantle as his own. Musician to Magician. Yet, Erie still yearns to perform.
Here is the concept from my sketchbook.
